Cam Newton puts on historic performance, but Panthers fall short.

September 12th, 2011

No one expected Cam Newton to put on a show quite like he did on Sunday.  Sure, some people thought he would score a touchdown or not have a bad completion percentage, but did they really believe Cam would throw for 422 yards, 2 TDs and a run for a TD too? This performance was even more impressive that Cam Newton was playing on the road.

Cam Newton wasn’t playing like a rookie, at all. He was throwing the ball with authority, not looking nervous for his first NFL game. He completed 64 percent of his throws, finished with over a 110 passer rating. He started out fast whether it was completing short passes or throwing deep balls for completions to get his confidence going. Cam Newton was comfortable in the pocket despite the blitzes he was getting.  Cam Newton proved to the NFL and his teammates that he can get it done at the next level.

Cam Newton and Steve Smith were connecting all day long. Cam threw his two TD passes to Smith. He threw one electrifying TD pass in the 1st quarter, when he geared up a long ball that was slightly under thrown, but Steve Smith was able to catch in stride and run to the house for a 77 yd score. He threw another one in the second quarter to give Carolina a 14-7 lead. Steve Smith had eight catches for 178 yards and the two scores from Newton.

Cam Newton had a great first half and it continued in the second half as he continued to rack on yardage and scored his first rushing TD of his career. Of course, late in the fourth quarter when Carolina gave up the lead, and found themselves trailing, Newton lead them down the field within scoring distance, but failed to convert a fourth down play by a single yard. Due to that failed conversion, Carolina lost a heartbreaker. No matter how well Newton played, he didn’t take the loss well. ”The last time I lost a game was Navarro Junior College,” Newton said.

“What do you want me to say, it feels great? It is not a comfortable feeling for me.” Newton had the most passing yards for a rookie in a NFL debut in NFL history, passing Otto Graham for the Browns, who threw for 346 yards.

Cam Newton did make mistakes towards the end by throwing three straight incompletions when at the Cardinals 11 yard line and a short pass that was a yard shy of the first down. He also threw the ball in tight spaces that resulted in incompletions and an interception. Cam Newton was also sacked four times,  but that was due to the blitzing of the Cardinals defense and the weak offensive line.

The real question is however, can Cam Newton do it again? Cam Newton has a lot of potential, now will he throw for 422 yards again next week, probably not. However, he should continue to have similar success. He will struggle from time to time as the better defenses he plays, like next week when he plays the defending Super Bowl Champs, the Green Bay Packers. This will be a real test for him as he plays one of the best defenses in the league with star players all around on defense like Clay Matthews and B.J Raji.

What does losing Peyton Manning do for the Colts?

September 9th, 2011

Peyton Manning underwent another surgery on his neck a couple days ago, which will sideline him for at least two to three months. This surgery was necessary as his wasn’t making progress in recovering from surgery on his neck in the off-season, so Manning underwent what some experts say was a “career saving surgery.” The Colts are going to have a completely different offense for the most part now that Manning looks to be gone for most if not all of the season. The Colts are going to have a new identity without Manning this season

Can Kerry Collins lead the Colts to victories? Kerry Collins is a veteran, but he is no Peyton Manning. Collins has been a good quarterback in his career, but there hasn’t been this much pressure on him ever. He has to lead the Colts to victories, but he is going to have a difficult time. Kerry Collins was with Tennessee the last five seasons and there he had the best running back in the NFL, Chris Johnson, but in Indianapolis he doesn’t have a running back near the quality of Chris Johnson. Now, Kerry Collins has a much better receiving core than he had in Tennessee. In Indianapolis, he has Reggie Wayne (seven consecutive seasons with more than 1000 yards receiving), Dallas Clark (arguably the best tight end in the game), and has several young receivers too with Anthony Gonzalez, Austin Collie and Pierre Garcon. Collie and Garcon may be young, but are very good as well; they are extremely fast and quick off their feet.

What is the key for the Colts to win games? Many people would think it depends on Kerry Collins for the Colts to win games, but it’s the defense. The defense has always struggled for the Colts, but had its moments. This season, it must be different; the Colts defense will get pressure, but their secondary has to cover receivers much better and not allow them to get free. Most importantly, the Colts defense, must stop the run; they can’t allow their opponents to run all over them like they have done in the past. They always had Peyton Manning to back them up, but they don’t have that this year and that’s why they have to make a stand. If they can stop the run consistently and but their opponents in 3rd and longs with Mathis and Freeney as your pass rushers, the Colts defense will be one of the best this season. If the defense can be dominant, then the Colts will have a chance to win games with Kerry Collins at quarterback.

How will the offense be different? The offense will be significantly different with the absence of Peyton Manning. The offense is going to have to try to get the run game involved often to relieve pressure off of Kerry Collins. The offense isn’t going to be very fast-paced; the offense is going to huddle up since the offensive coordinator will be calling the plays and not the quarterback like Manning did. The hardest part of the offense will be the two minute drill when the Colts have to score fast. They were excellent in the two minute drill with Peyton Manning, but with Kerry Collins they may not be that spectacular. Kerry Collins is also going to have to release the ball quickly since the offensive line isn’t the greatest and the many reasons why Peyton Manning didn’t get sacked so many times was because he got rid of the ball so quickly.

What will we learn about the Colts this season? We will really learn how much Peyton Manning means to the Colts. Peyton Manning has been with the Colts for 13  seasons and has been the best quarterback in the NFL. We are going to learn how good a coach Jim Caldwell really is; he got to the playoffs in his first two seasons, but we’ll see how he does when he’s missing his best player on his team. The receiving core has always been doubted whether they are really that good since they have Peyton Manning, well we’re about to find out how talented they really are. In close games, one player is going to have to step up and make a play, it’s always been Peyton Manning, but who will it be now?

How many games can the Colts win if Manning is gone the entire season? Most people would assume, the Colts can’t win 4 games without Peyton, but with the signing of Kerry Collins they have a chance to win a lot more. The Colts schedule isn’t exactly tough though, there are only really five really tough games that the Colts will struggle to win and those are: @ New England, @ Baltimore, @ New Orleans, vs. Pittsburgh, and vs. Atlanta. All of those games are playoff teams from last year and are favorites this year to go far. The Colts also have two games against Houston that will be tough as well since Houston is getting better and better every year.  The rest of the schedule is relatively easy and I think Kerry Collins can help the Colts win. The Colts have the ability to win between six and ten games and possibly make it to the playoffs.

Is Young finally emerging as one of America’s future tennis stars?

September 5th, 2011

Donald Young was thought to be the next great American tennis player. When he turned pro in 2004, his game seemed sluggish, but three years later when he was 18, he looked ready to become the next american tennis great. However, he struggled tremendously as he wasn’t able to get the job done. Finally, it seems like Donald Young is ready as he reached the 4th round at the US Open for the first time in his career.

Is this significant achievement a sign of more great things to come? Donald young beat Juan Ignacio Chela in straight sets on Sunday to reach the fourth round of the US Open for the first time in his career. Young is showing promising signs of becoming the next great American tennis player. His forehand his for sure his strength and his ability to use his opponent’s pace against them is strongest aspect of his game. His backhand is very vulnerable and he will have to improve it for him to compete to win majors, but he’s getting there.  A couple of years ago, Young wasn’t playing up to his capability due to young getting frustrated to easily and not allowing himself to be patient. Now, he stays calm and uses the emotion against his opponent.

Will Young get to the top 25 by the end of 2012? Young is a good player and on the verge of possibly getting to the top 25, but he may not be ready to be top 25 yet. He will for sure be in the top 50 by next year. He’s already 85 in the world, and looking to improve each and everyday. Young has to improve his return of service if he wants to get there. In the matches at this year’s US Open, a lot of his returns have dropped short and his opponents haven’t taken advantage of that. The better players however, will take advantage of that.

Can he get past the 4th round this year? Donald Young faces Andy Murray on Tuesday in the 4th round and he is definitely the underdog against him. However, Donald Young did beat Andy Murray in Indian Wells, but this is on a bigger stage. Murray hasn’t been great this US Open, but he’s one of the best returners in the game today and will be a tough opponent to get past. Donald Young will have to use the crowd and keep his intensity in the match for him to win.

Jimmy Clausen vs. Cam Newton QB Competition: What’s the take on the competition after one preseason game?

August 14th, 2011

After one preseason game already, the Panthers QB competition between rookie Cam Newton and Jimmy Clausen (entering 2nd NFL season) is heating up. After the Panthers 20-10 victory over the Giants in their first preseason game of the season, there’s a lot to be said about the game regarding the two quarterbacks. Let’s evaluate their play against the Giants.

Jimmy Clausen: Clausen didn’t play that long, but he finished with 4/7 69 yds, 1 Td, 1 Int and a 90.8 passer rating. Jimmy Clausen played the entire 1st quarter and that was it, but we saw a lot from him in that quarter, some bad and some good. On Clausen’s second pass attempt of the game, he threw it behind his receiver and right to the giants linebacker Michael Boley, who intercepted it and returned it for the score.  Clausen had one bright highlight on the night; Clausen backed up to pass and threw a laser in between two defenders to Greg Olsen for a 18 yd TD pass. Aside from that though, it wasn’t a great performance by Clausen. Clausen for the most part was looking for short passes and was sacked twice.

Cam Newton: Newton didn’t play that well, but from what we saw it was impressive. He finished with 8/19 134 yds 0 Tds 0 Ints, and a 66.6 passer rating. Newton didn’t have any Tds, but he also didn’t make any mistakes, which is key. He only completed 42 percent of his passes, but a lot of his misses were deep throws towards the end of the half when Newton was trying to get a big play. Newton had several big plays; he had several big yardage completions including a 18, 30 and 36 yard completions in the 2nd quarter. Newton was 5/13 96 yds passing in the 2nd quarter and was 3/6 38 yds in the 3rd quarter. Most of Newton’s misses in the 2nd quarter were deep threats towards the end of the quarter when he was trying to get the big “heave” play. Newton’s performance was very positive going forward and it will be interesting how the 2nd preseason game goes. Cam Newon had this to say about his first NFL game, ”I was just trying to go out there and first off prove to myself that I could play on this level,” Newton said. “After that first little completion, I started to get the juices flowing. It was like, ‘Hey, I’m in the NFL,’ and I started to get a little swagger about myself.”

It’s still hard to tell who will be the starter come week 1, but Cam looked a bit more impressive than Clausen, but there’s still 3 more preseason games to be played and hopefully we’ll know by then who the starter will be.

NFL Season Preview: Several Questions heading into the NFL Season……

August 12th, 2011

The NFL Lockout ended last month and there will officially be a football season. After months of a the players and owners unable to come to an agreement, the two sides finally reached a deal in late July. The NFL season will be as good as ever, as many teams improved this offseason with the draft and picking up free agents. There are many teams that have a chance to contend for a Super Bowl Title including: Green Bay Packers (defending Super Bowl Champs), Pittsburgh Steelers (defending AFC Champion), Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts and the New England Patriots. There are several questions that have risen going into the season.

Can the Packers Repeat as Super Bowl Champs? The Packers won the Super Bowl last year and in spite of that, no one is talking about them. The Packers have all their injured players last year back and healthy, which sparks trouble for everyone else. Most Super Bowl champions don’t perform well the following well. Most of them don’t even make it to the playoffs and if they do, they don’t win a playoff game. The Green Packers may be under the radar, but they are one of the most explosive teams.

Are the Eagles the favorite in the NFC? The Eagles have made some exploding transactions this offseason; they signed ex-Giants receiver Steve Smith, they traded Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals for Dominique-Rodgers Cromartie  and they signed one the best cornerbacks in the league, Nnamdi Asomugha. With Michael Vick, LeSean McCoy, and DeSean Jackson leading the offense and Nnamdi Asomugha and Assante Samuel leading the defense, this team could be explosive. Many NFL experts are picking the Eagles to win the NFC, but everyone is forgetting the Green Bay Packers are the defending Super Bowl Champs. The Eagles shouldn’t be the favorite since they have yet to play any games with all these players and the Eagles can’t be the favorite till they knock out the Packers.

Will the Colts have another slow start? Peyton Manning is recovering from another surgery just like last season, so who could have another slow start. If he has a slow start, then the Colts will suffer. Peyton is missing time away from training camp, but his rehab is going as planned and it looks like he will get a few preseason games in, so he should be good to go and it doesn’t seem like the Colts will have a slow start.

Is Arian Foster the real deal, or was last season a fluke? Arian Foster was phenomenal last season, rushing for 1614 yards and 16 Tds. in 2009, Foster didn’t even rush for 300 yards. Now, was last season a fluke or will Foster keep it up this season as one of the best running backs in the league? It’s hard to believe that Foster will not be a productive back, he’s quick on his feet, has the ability to break tackles and has great explosion when he’s in space. Foster probably won’t do better than his 2010 totals, but he will absolutely run for over 1000 yards and 10 Tds at least.

This questions will be answered soon as the NFL season kicks off in less than a month. We’ll find out soon enough what teams are the best and what teams are the worst.

NBA Playoffs begin today…What should we expect this year?

April 16th, 2011

The NBA playoffs begin today with several teams in action today. Derrick Rose and the Bulls face off against the Pacers, D-Wade, LeBron James and the Heat play the Sixers, Dwight Howard and the Magic battle the Hawks, and Dirk and his Mavs face off against the Trail Blazers. The favorites in this year’s playoffs from the Eastern Conference are: (1) Chicago Bulls and (2) Miami Heat and from the Western Conference: (1) San Antonio Spurs, (2) Los Angeles Lakers, (3) Dallas Mavericks, and (4) Oklahoma City Thunder. As the 1st round tips off today, there are several questions surrounding the first round.

Which Top seed has the biggest challenge in the 1st round? The Dallas Mavericks is the one top seed that could lose as they face the threatening Portland Trail Blazers. Portland has been playing great, they finished the regular season winning 11 of 16 games to end the season. The Blazers are young team with talented players with LaMarcus Aldridge and Gerald Wallace, along with Brandon Roy. The Mavericks better watch out for them as they have a history for losing in the first round. Since the NBA 06-07 season, the Mavericks have lost in the first round 3 times in the last four seasons. They are going to try to change that, but it won’t be easy to get past these Blazers.

Do the Knicks have a chance against the Celtics? The Knicks do have a chance against the Celtics, but it’s unlikely that the Knicks will be able to win four out of seven games against the Celtics. The Knicks don’t have the kind of defense to stop the Celtics. To win championships, you need defense and that’s something the Knicks don’t have yet. The Knicks will be able to compete with the Celtics with the triple threat of Carmelo, Stoudamire, and Billups. The Knicks don’t have the chemistry to be a great team yet, it takes time, just ask the Miami Heat. It took them a couple of months to be a real threat. Although the Knicks will  pose danger to the Celtics, it seems unlikely the Knicks will beat the Celtics.

Will Oklahoma City get out of the first round this year? The Thunder should most definitely get out of the first round this year. They lost to the Lakers last season in a thrilling round, but they face the Nuggets this year. Both of these teams score a lot and have mediocre defense, but the Thunder have the edge. They have home court this year in their first round, they have two superstars with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook and they have a big man this year to help their defense with Kendrick Perkins

NFL Best Games of 2010:#8 Falcons vs. Saints Week 3.

February 23rd, 2011

The Falcons and Saints had another epic showdown in week 3. The Saints were the defending champs and were trying to maintain their winning streak. Drew Brees played great ( 365 passing yards, 3 Tds), but also turned the ball over with two interceptions. At first though he led the Saints to an early lead in the 1st quarter with a 14-7 lead with 2 Td passes behind Drew Brees ( 2 yd td pass to tight end Jeremy Shockey and 80 yard TD pass to wide receiver Lance Moore). Matt Ryan was very impressive too with 2 Td passes and no turnovers and he had an early Td pass to get the Falcons on the board in the 1st quarter. He also helped them tie the game before halftime as he led them down the field, then Michael Turner finsihed the drive with a 1 yard TD run. The Saints reclaimed the lead with Brees hooking up with Lance Moore agan for a TD. However, late in the fourth quarter, Matt Ryan found star wide receiver Roddy White to give the Falcons the lead, but as the Falcons thought they were going to win, the Saints kicked a last second field goal to tie the game and go into overtime. The Saints made the first charge towards winning by driving right down the field and had an easy field goal kick with a 29 yd attempt, but it was wide right. The Falcons then took advantage of the Saints mistake and as a result drove down the field, then Matt Bryant kicked the game-winner for the win!! Final Score: Falcons 27 Saints 24!

NFL Best Games of the Year: #9 Jaguars vs. Raiders Week 14!

February 20th, 2011

In a critical game that had playoff stakes on the line, no team wanted to admit defeat. The Jaguars and Raiders both came out with lots of energy and in a offensive juggernautgame, the team that had the most energy in the end came out victorious. It seemed like the Raiders were the better team when the Raiders jumped out to an early 17-7 lead behind Jason Campbell’s 2 TD passes ( one to Darren McFadden and the other to Louis Murphy). The Jags did get on the board with a TD pass by David Garrard. The score was 17-7 going into halftime. The Jaguars came out of halftime with a lto of motivation to get back in this game and they did just that behind their rushing attack that was non-existent in the 1st half. Rashard Jennings gave the Jaguars hope when he ran for a 74 yd TD run and got the Jaguars within three. Then, David Garrard threw his 3rd TD pass of the day (2nd in the quarter) to Mike Sims-Walker to give the Jaguars their first lead of the day with a 28-24 lead after the end of the 3rd quarter. The Jags added a field goal on that score in the 4th to increase their lead to a 31-24 lead. Darren McFadden, running back of the Raiders got the Raiders back in when he scored a Td off of a 36 yd TD run to tie the game with under two minutes to play. The Jaguars wouldn’t back off though; after a big kick return to set up the Jaguars at the Raiders 30 yard line, Maurice Jones-Drew ran it in the end zone for a 30 yd TD run to give the Jaguars a 38-31 lead with 1:34 left on the clock. The Raiders tried to rally, but the Jaguars defense held their ground and held on to the 38-31 victory.

NFL Best Games of the Year: #10 Baltimore vs. Pittsburgh Week 4!

February 18th, 2011

The rivalry of the Steelers and Ravens is one of the best in sports and in week 4 it was no different as the physicality of the Ravens and Steelers proved to be an exciting game. The Steelers came into this game without their star quarterback Ben Roethlisberger since he was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the season because he violated the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Rashard Mendenhall stepped up for the Steelers though in this critical AFC North showdown. Mendenhall had 79 yards rushing on 25 carries (3.2 average) and also had 2 TDs. Mendenhall was fantastic and gave the Steelers a 14-10 lead in the 4th quarter. The Ravens defense was great; they forced one turnover, sacked Charlie Batch ( 2nd string QB) twice, gave up only 210 total yards, and frustrated Batch as he had a passer rating of 57.8. This defense continued its fine effort in the 4th as they shut the Steelers down after the touchdown by Mendenhall. Joe Flacco led the Ravens back to victory when he got the ball with55 seconds left with 40 yards to go for the win. Flacco guided them all the way down the field and then found T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the back of the endzone with 32 seconds left to clinch the win for the Ravens. Flacco wasn’t great, but came up big when the Ravens needed him. This game was a great physical game to watch andit came down to a last second drive for the Ravens to win it, 17-14!

NFL Best Games of the Year, Best Upsets of the Year, and Best Performances of the Year!

February 18th, 2011

With the NFL season coming to a close, it comes that time of the year, where I will put the top 10 best NFL games of the 2010-2011 NFL season, the best upsets of 2010, and the the best performances of 2010. There were some great games this year with the Patriots and Colts producing another classic showdown, the Eagles and Giants game had one of the greatest finishes in the history of the NFL. Those were just two of the many great games, but we’ll have to narrow that list to 10.  There were some great upsets with the Cleveland Browns beating the defending Super Bowl Champs and the New England Patriots. There were also some great performances as well like Arian Foster’s 231 rushing yards in week 1, Reggie Wayne’s 196 receiving yards in week 4 and many more. I will be starting with the top 10 best games of the year and move on then to the top 10 best upsets of the year and then lastly do the best performances of the year.
